Youth our asset

Youth, comprising a large percentage of Maldives population, plays an essential role in the development and productivity of the nation. The sheer energy they posses and their undeniable  ability for its application makes them a vastly valuable asset.
The small country of ours; the Maldives, also consist of a substantial youth population. And it is delightful to note that, they are already a vital asset to the nation.  The youth of this nation are already involved in social, economic, and health issues as well as many more important area.

The number of adolescents and  youth in the Maldives is rapidly approaching 40% of the total population. With this rapid increase in the youth population its is imperative that the country match this growth with its capacity to engage its young people in economically and socially productive way.
Research suggests that all young people need to fulfill their four basic human social needs

  • Security (Structure)
  • Autonomy (Power and Influence)
  • Achievement (Competence, Mastery)
  • Affiliation (Belonging, Membership)

When youth aren’t provided with the opportunity to satisfy these needs positively (through school, family-life, employment, membership in sports/recreational organizations or faith-based institutions), they often turn to negative or destructive avenues: For example, street-gang membership, drug culture and criminal affiliation can satisfy all four of these elements, placing young people at risk for a host of negative outcomes. Therefore, organizations, programs, and institutions that can provide a healthy and productive means of achieving these competencies are likely to prevent youth from engaging in risky or detrimental behavior.

Sports

Sports is about beauty and grace, power and precision, commitment and dedication fairness and inclusiveness.

The Republic of Maldives endorses the UNESCO International Charter for physical Education and Sports, as enshrined in Article 1:
"The practice of physical education and sports is a fundamental right for all...and this right should not be treated different from rights to adequate food, shelter and medical care."
Within the context of its  social justices objective, will the Government of the Maldives will give sports the same recognition, respect and encouragement as are accorded to the other social programs such as health services, housing, education and food?

The pressures on elite athletes are heavy and, apart from financial support, they need support also with education and careers. Many do not know where to seek advice.

Some career or financial assistance may be available from local businesses or international businesses operating in the country, while the police and defense force can provide useful careers for some athletes while, at the same time, letting them pursue their sporting interests. Opportunities might be available in the public service. This will require some special initiative to stimulate interest and the council will investigate the possibilities for finding employment for athletes in the national services or corporations.

It is considered, however, that, in the short term, there would be advantage in designating a person, who might be a volunteer or retired businessman, to provide advice or some help identified elite athletes to find career opportunities or financial assistance. Support would also be provided by the Maldives National Institute of Sports.

  Bank of Maldives

Bank of Maldives finished 2015 with a strong final term recording a Profit of MVR 236,000,000, an increase of 48% on the previous quarter.

Unaudited full year 2015 financials show an increase in profit of 13% versus 2014 with good year on year growth in most areas. This growth was achieved notwithstanding the fact that 2015 saw a major MVR 150 ,000,000 investment program with BML introducing new branches and self-service banking centres, new Rufiyaa and USD ATMs as well as upgrading technology and rolling out cash agent services to all inhabited islands.

New lending more than doubled to MVR 3.4 billion during 2015, demonstrating the Bank’s willingness to support and help Maldivian individuals and businesses. At the same time, the quality of the loan given continued to strengthen with Non-Performing Loans reducing by 12%. Capital levels ended the year well above regulatory requirements.

Commenting on the results, CEO and Managing Director Andrew Healy stated “I would like to thank our staff for their hard work in finishing the year so positively. They have worked tirelessly both to deliver our investment program successfully and to keep the positive momentum in our business performance going. We will report more fully when our audited financials are available but it is pleasing that we have been able to invest so significantly in improving our services and our support for our customers and the country, while at the same time growing our business in a solid and prudent manner”.

With a network of 27 branches, 75 ATMs, 3,100 POS merchants, 177 cash agents, 9 Self-Service Banking Centres and 5 Dhoni Banking Units, BML’s investment and presence far exceeds that of all other banks combined.
